This was one of my very best stays in Japan. Reaching the place is easy, as the bus stops right next to it (Nikko pass is essential for this purpose, since the bus trip would otherwise cost a fortune!). The place is secluded, especially in winter. If you're after tranquility and mountains, this is the place. The resort restaurant serves its own breakfast and dinner - quite expensive, but this is a four-star hotel, and the quality of the food (and the service) is superb. For cheaper options, one may need to take the bus to the next bigger places. This property has two onsen pools: one indoor and one outdoor, both great. In the evening, there’s fire in the lounge fireplace, adding a very rustic feeling to the whole thing. We certainly enjoyed it. Overall, this is not a cheap place at all, but the quality was outstanding, and we loved every moment of the stay (except the morning we had to leave).

The food in the restaurant was amazing. Dinner, including seasonal specialties, was absolutely delicious, and the table service western breakfast (which we were not expecting), was fantastic. All rooms are lakeside, although it might be difficult to see the lake itself through the leaves during summer. We had a connecting door between our two rooms, and all the rooms have balconies as well. The outdoor onsen was lovely. With dinner and breakfast included in our room rate, the overall value was exceptional.

The service at Chuzenji Kanaya Hotel was exceptional. We ordered room service for dinner and we expected the usual American treatment where they knock on the door and leave the food outside. But at Chuzenji, the super sweet employee wheeled in the cart and set up a gorgeous table setting for us at the table in our room. It was such a lovely surprise to be treated so well despite choosing the cheapest food option.

Enjoyed the location in deepest winter condition with 2 digit minus degrees a lot of snow on a sunny weekend - perfect. Just a few other guest, onsen was great experience in these conditions

Very nice place to stay if your plan is to rest by the lake. Nice outdoor onsen. Nice porch. Clean and comfortable. Hotel shuttle bus from Tobu-Nikko station is very useful. Cute room key.
